May 18, 2008: Connecting Waves: Moving with the Self, the Other, and in Community
September 21, 2008: Shadow Waves: A Moving Journey through the Shadowland
November 16, 2008: Change Waves: Awareness, Attention and Moving to Action

Sundays, 11:00 am - 5:00 pm at Carderock Springs Swim & Tennis Club, Bethesda MD

Waves - Dimensions Series: Gabrielle Roth¹s 5Rhythms® Movement Meditation is a multi-dimensional practice that moves the body, heart and mind in the service of the free soul and the collective spirit. This three part series is an opportunity to expand our visceral understanding of three deeper aspects of the practice.

Connecting Waves: Wherever we start, whichever direction we take, it's all about connection, about relating, outside in and inside out. In this 5Rhythms® workshop we'll move through multiple Waves as we explore the dances of partnership, the dances of connection - with ourselves, with partners, and as members of a community. We'll discover where we connect and where we lose touch, where we partner and where we part. We'll move, on our own and together, through and to a fresher, deeper and more loving understanding of relationship, to the self, the other and our many tribes.

Shadow Waves: We all know how it feels to just not want to get out of bed in the morning, to slog through the day, and finally fall back into bed.  What if we could turn our inertia into art, turn ourselves into a ball of energy? Take a chance to dance out loud the tension in a jawbone or held in a shoulder, embody our stick figures and move on out fully fleshed?  Give up control, dive beneath the surface and melt the ice that casts the shadows we so often find ourselves moving through?  In this workshop we'll dance through the shadow-land and follow the map of the 5Rhythms® into the light.

Change Waves: The 5Rhythms® practice is a practice of embodying change from the feet up, from the inside out, straight from the heart, and out into the street.  We are all creatures of change, constantly in motion, whether we are aware of it or not.  We resist it and we crave it.  We dance with it and sometimes we sit it out.  But no matter what, change is going to happen with or without our attention.  In this workshop we'll shake ourselves up from the ground we move on as we challenge ourselves to dance bigger and bolder, softer and more vulnerably.   We'll give ourselves the opportunity to expand our options, embrace possibility and move into action on and off the dance floor.

Body Wave: a 5Rhythms Journey 3/14 - 3/16/08

Dancers save the date for March 14th - 16th, 2008  for the Body Wave 5Rhythms Journey

Introductory Workshop - Saturday Evening
Intensive Workshop - Friday Night thru Sunday Afternoon

Whether you've danced the 5Rhythms® for years, meant to for years, or just found out about this dynamic, cathartic, joyful, insightful, wild Movement Meditation Practice of Gabrielle Roth's this workshop will ground us all in the basics, open us to the possibilities, and challenge us to take our practice deeper and further from wherever we start.

The 5Rhythms® is a living, breathing, evolving practice; one that we revisit over and over to expand our understanding of the basics and to integrate the changes that both the practice and we are experiencing as we transform into ever more expansive and compassionate beings.  It is a wonderful way to experience a deep and loving connection to self, to the other, and to the many communities to which we each belong.  Moving with attention to the 5Rhythms® of Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness leads each of us into a greater awareness of the vastness of soul - all through the action of our many unique and heart-full dances.

The key to unlocking our soul's door is the body. Each of us is blessed with the ultimate meditation tool, our body. This amazing teacher provides constant enlightenment with every breath and every step. In Body Wave we give ourselves the time to pay attention to our bodies, to the parts where we release and the parts where we resist, where we revolt and where we remove, where we reveal and where we revel. In this workshop we'll shake loose the building blocks our bodies and rebuild and reinvent ourselves from the feet up.

Over the course of the weekend we will dance and be danced - surrendering to wave after wave of our body's wisdom. Facilitated by Tammy Burstein, we will be led by the 5Rhythms® in waking up the body and waking up to the soul.  We will deepen and strengthen our understanding of the 5Rhythms® as we explore five physical gateways (feet, hips, head, hands, and breath) that inform and illuminate our practice.

We hope you will join us, newcomer, old-timer, beginner mind or devoted practitioner, to move a little further into the mystery.

Wed Gathering 1/16/08 - Pole Dancing

This week we will have the opportunity to dance and play on the pole with the lovely Michelle Carnes. the pole will come out at 8pm! Here is what Michelle says about it:

LET YOUR POLE GOD/DESS COME OUT TO PLAY
WHY: Because pole dancing is sexy, empowering exercise!
WHO: Anyone with an enthusiasm for dance, a willingness to participate/learn, with a supportive spirit (up to 250 lbs)
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
*Comfy, stretchy clothes (yoga pants or booty shorts are great)
*your camera
*boas, zills, feathers, glitter, masks, stripper gear (go for it!)
*a water bottle
*anything you count on for comfort while active
*if you have outrageously sexy shoes you love to strut in, bring them for the finale!
*and bring your inner pole dancer (we know s/he's in there!)

This is for both men and women.

MORE ABOUT POLE LOT OF FUN PARTIES...

Shared a FUN, positive, safe environment where you can come out and play, have a BLAST and be supported by your friends!

We take you through basic moves on the pole. We start out with simple moves and build on the basics to fluid, beautiful, yet simple routines.  At the end of the night, we have a grand finale when everyone gets to put on their own show!  YOU pick your moves, your props – EVERYTHING and transform yourself into the god/dess you are!

The evening is totally about FUN! There is no "right" or "wrong" way to experience a pole dancing party. You just have to watch the magic happen as each of you meets the pole. We
facilitate the process through a well-orchestrated system that flows smoothly from start to finish so that every partygoer present (whether shy or gregarious) has an empowering, FUN, supportive evening.

We have discovered that many people have a secret longing to be more seductive, more sensual, more empowered and confident at a deep, personal level that translates into every area of their lives. The beauty of a pole dancing party is that it promotes those feelings organically, while laughing, cheering, hooting and hollering in an amazingly supportive environment!

MORE ABOUT THE POLE DANCE INSTRUCTOR

Michelle Carnes is a professional pole dance instructor with training in ballet, ballroom, lapdancing and stripping.  Her anthropology doctoral dissertation is a three-year ethnographic study of black women's parties in Washington DC where women strip for women. She never played a traditional sport and was never a star athlete- she believes that everyone can pole dance, no matter what your background or profession.

I look forward to meeting your diva-licious pole god/desses and see what s/he's got!

Where do the 5 Rhythms come from?

The 5 Rhythms were created by Gabrielle Roth in the 1960s. She was teaching movement classes and noticed five distinct patterns, which she eventually called the 5 Rhythms - flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, stillness. She still teaches classes on the 5 Rhythms in New York City to this day.

More about each rhythm at Gabrielle Roth's website under the link "5 Rhythms" on right hand side

Why do we dance?

People have always danced. Originally we danced for worship and healing. Our ancestors viewed nature and all of its elements as an expression of God. To duplicate or mimic nature through movement and sounds was their first and highest way to connect with spirit, and I believe was the origin of dance.

In present times you can find spiritual dancing in every country in the world. There are dances based on animals and other natural things. People dance to alter their state of consciousness or become the spirit of the sun, moon, animal or plant.
