Abundant Michael: Spirit

Is the Mind-Body healing effect getting stronger?

The mind-body is a very powerful healing system, even more powerful according to current research than many drugs. And it is an effect that has been increasing in the last 20 years. More details on this in this article with exerts below

In a study last year, Harvard Medical School researcher Ted Kaptchuk devised a clever strategy for testing his volunteers' response to varying levels of therapeutic ritual. The study focused on irritable bowel syndrome, a painful disorder that costs more than $40 billion a year worldwide to treat. First the volunteers were placed randomly in one of three groups. One group was simply put on a waiting list; researchers know that some patients get better just because they sign up for a trial. Another group received placebo treatment from a clinician who declined to engage in small talk. Volunteers in the third group got the same sham treatment from a clinician who asked them questions about symptoms, outlined the causes of IBS, and displayed optimism about their condition.

Not surprisingly, the health of those in the third group improved most. In fact, just by participating in the trial, volunteers in this high-interaction group got as much relief as did people taking the two leading prescription drugs for IBS. And the benefits of their bogus treatment persisted for weeks afterward, contrary to the belief—widespread in the pharmaceutical industry—that the placebo response is short-lived.

It's not only trials of new drugs that are crossing the futility boundary. Some products that have been on the market for decades, like Prozac, are faltering in more recent follow-up tests. In many cases, these are the compounds that, in the late '90s, made Big Pharma more profitable than Big Oil. But if these same drugs were vetted now, the FDA might not approve some of them. Two comprehensive analyses of antidepressant trials have uncovered a dramatic increase in placebo response since the 1980s. One estimated that the so-called effect size (a measure of statistical significance) in placebo groups had nearly doubled over that time.

It's not that the old meds are getting weaker, drug developers say. It's as if the placebo effect is somehow getting stronger.

Benedetti has helped design a protocol for minimizing volunteers' expectations that he calls "open/hidden." In standard trials, the act of taking a pill or receiving an injection activates the placebo response. In open/hidden trials, drugs and placebos are given to some test subjects in the usual way and to others at random intervals through an IV line controlled by a concealed computer. Drugs that work only when the patient knows they're being administered are placebos themselves.

Ironically, Big Pharma's attempt to dominate the central nervous system has ended up revealing how powerful the brain really is. The placebo response doesn't care if the catalyst for healing is a triumph of pharmacology, a compassionate therapist, or a syringe of salt water. All it requires is a reasonable expectation of getting better. That's potent medicine.

How can I use Sat Nam Rassayan for healing?

Sat Nam Rasayan is the healing modality of Kundalini Yoga. Done with partners it is similar to pure meditation in stillness and listening to our own inner life while touching into another. It is the practice of bringing someone into your life without conditions. If someone affects your space, you need to question how you are seeing the world in relation to him or her.

We use Kundalini meditations to open up a field of silence beyond normal perception. This expanded awareness, in each of us, is a powerful tool to heal one another. Text from Devi Dyal’s (Dana Verkouteren) who teaches Kundlalini yoga and SNR in Cabin John MD

This video is of Guru Dev explaining Sat Nam Rasayan and the capacity to heal from the state of shuniya. Guru Dev Singh the healer talks about how we can heal through understanding out interconnectedness. He also talks about how you can't have compassion if you have anxiety yourself. It is through becoming completely objective (shuniya) that we can heal others.

Who is God? It is you - interview with Fiona Fey on Lilou Mace TV

Fiona Fey was in a corporate job she didn't enjoy and decided to leave. On a car trip afterwards she asked who is God? She shares the answers and consequences in this interview with spiritual web TV journalist Lilou Mace. Fiona wrote the book "Who is God? You are" and talks about overcoming old conditioning and how to be happy from the inside out. If you don't know Lilou she is traveling the world interviewing spiritual teachers from Wayne Dyer, Caroline Myss to Fiona.

Jaden Miracles tele-session

I just did a Jaden Phoenix activation for Miracles. It is over the phone

Whoa that was powerful stuff. I was getting downloads for about 20 minutes. In addition for an hour prior to the session I felt this "klutz" energy in me that lead to me dropping stuff etc (gone now thank goodness). I worked on grounding the miracle energy in MY 3D (going "low" as Mark Dunn would say) and that seemed to help reduce my body twitching from the downloads.

I like looking for miracles in everyday. Did you know that our cells are full of mitochondria that provide the energy for our bodies and that these microscopic creatures have their own DNA and reproduction - basically they were separate from humans and decided to symbioticly live inside our cells billions of years ago. We also have more friendly bacteria in our guts than "human" cells in our bodies - and without them we could not digest our food.  So as well as telling my body parts and cells that I love them and thanking them for what they do I have done same for the mitochondria and bacteria in my gut. That is a miracle to me!

Afterwards I was full of energy, slept good and woke up happy at 6am

Unity and Processing Anger

When I a mfeeling angry I am use a phase that I learn from Millie's latest book "I'm sorry. I forgot. I love you". I said it to myself directed at the other person in my mind (and from my Self!) several times and the anger is gone and my tummy is relaxing again. It is great way to remember the unity that we all are one. Even the parts that I create anger from reacting to!

(Millie's book is called Crafting a Community - recommended)

Mark Dunn - disconnecting from national morphic field

Morphic FieldAfter the Mark Dunn workshop in April I did some playing with disconnecting myself from the morphic field of the USA. Felt the pattern and how my pattern was connected, then asked them to separate out. I felt them shift after a little while. I felt good about it and didn't seem so attached to news about USA. Nothing much else seemed to have changed until I returned from my Peru trip to USA. Then

•US immigration quizzed me aggressively for about 20 minutes before letting me in (I am US citizen)

•US custom sent me through red channel for bag search

•United airlines lost my bags

•I worried that I might miss my connecting flight

Anyway throughout the process I just kept going low, worked on the pattern in front of me and was friendly and helply to the officials. It all worked out fine. (My bags were delivered a few days later). And then in line for TSA security I worked the pattern for somehow making my connecting flight even though I was about 15 minutes after takeoff time and feeling anxious. Well the flight was delayed for 45 minutes and I caught easily!

Morphic Field..After this experience in 3D I decided to do some smoothing out of my field and USA field and last time I entered the country it went as smoothly as for the other US citizens in line (still got 5 minutes of immigration quiz but at least everyone did too - and that is a topic for another day)

I am wondering if anyone else has had experience with disconnecting from a large morphic field and what happened for you?

Introduction to Meditation 9/14/11 - Wed Gathering in Rockville

Michael/Michelle here:
I have been meditating every day for over three years now. This year I have found it has really helped me stay calm and centered and grounded as many things change around me. I remembered when I started meditating I worried was I doing it right? What about all these stray thoughts? What if I skip a day? This week Randy will help those who want to meditate every day but not stuck trying to do it.

This week I am in in Ascuncion Paraguay. Paraguay has relaxed vibe plus a stubborn/proud streak, almost a death energy (they had a war in 1870s with Argentina and Brazil and Uruguay where 99% of males over 15 years old in country died - still recovering from that - that is why only 6 million people live here and it is almost the area of California which has 36 million people). I am applying for residency here because it is easy to get and will led to second passport in 3 years if I want it. Can use to live in Chile or Peru etc or even here. But I think I prefer the mountain vibe to the low land tropical one. Though the people are friendly here and the women are into high heels (which I like :-) it is a bit conservative.  Only legalized divorce a few years ago. it is the Catholic influence I think. They also got rid of a dictator in 1989 and had a pretty violent time under him (however the revolution was fairly peaceful in 89, sorta like the East German Wall toppling after years of brutal dictatorship there. Hmm may there there was something energetic going on in 89 that lead to so many dictactorships changing in Eastern Europe and South America at the same time...).

I tell you the police here look like they are dressed to be in WWII German Afrika Corp... or French foreign legion... kinda weird but I guess a bit better than all the police in some other countries looking like they are in the Army. Almost like I am in the movie Casablanca! Of course these days I sometimes think that the police in USA and UK look liek the Army too - when I seen SWAT team like cops in the airport carrying automatic weapons and bullet proof vests... and read about raids by SWAT teams with the FDA on raw milk farms or Gibson Guitar...

Tarot for Decision Making 7/27/11 - Wed Gathering in Rockville

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we learn how to help make complex decisions Tarot with Diane Rukmini Bongiorni
Tarot cards have been used by mystics and occultists in efforts at divination or as a map of mental and spiritual pathways, perhaps from
ancient Egypt or the Kabbalah. Dr Carl Jung said that ‘the cards are descendants from the archetypes of transformation’. Come learn the meanings and how to use Tarot cards for decision-making.

A tarot card reading will give you the general outcome of the ways matters are progressing, IF you don’t make any changes to the way you are thinking, feeling or acting – and the cards assume you don’t make any changes. There is very little in life that could be classed as “fixed.” We all have free will in our choices, decisions and actions. Sometimes things may hit you unexpectedly, however you can always decide how you react to those.

If the outcome is looking rather challenging, you have the opportunity to make changes, so that you can steer your life in a more positive direction. See some light at the end of the tunnel, when all looks dark, bleak and hopeless around you. It can bring some hope, optimism and encouragement to your life. Often that will be enough to open up your own inner resources such as creativity, problem solving, intuition and the ability to notice a different way forward.

You can consider an “alternate future” to the one which is currently unfolding and make better, more informed choices for yourself. You can explore various options to create the future you desire, and look at ways of enabling you to get to where you really want to go. You can then make the most informed choices and decisions, as the cards can make you aware of potential positives and challenges in each path. Tarot cards cannot make any decisions for you.  (From http://www.learntarotonline.com/articles/tarotcanhelpwith.html)

Rukmini has been reading tarot for over 35 years.  She has been blessed with the gift to receive deep guidance and information in very complex situations.
She is also a Feng Shui consultant, energy healer, and tarot reader.

How to Create Your Own Rituals 6/22/11 - Wed Gathering in Rockville

 Michael/Michelle here:
Summer solstice is nearly here, and many people will celebrate with
different rituals. So now is the perfect time to learn about creating
your rituals. I have found that a ritual together with sacred space can
lead to deep inner transformation and give meaning and closure to
otherwise upsetting events. Or help create greater meaning to happy ones!

I am currently in New Mexico for the Kundalini Yoga Summer Solstice
festival (http://www.3ho.org/) with about 2000 other yogis. I spent the
day before the festival at Ojo Caliente hot springs - there is something
about hot mineral springs, and water in general, that I find very
relaxing. After an hour of soaking in the waters I found my mind
emptying and my body relaxing (hmm could it be that a full mind tends to
cause a tense body?). I have read that rebirthers use each of the four
elements for rejuvenation and I can definitely say that water is good!
(Air or breath is used a lot in yoga and works well too. Fire gazing is
hypnotic and relaxing too. As for Earth, well being in the mountains of
Peru was very connecting to spirit for me!). For me it is good to take
time for myself and not overdo things like I used to. When I traveled on
Monday I worked for 2 hours on email, had a relaxing lunch, followed by
a massage and then took my time packing so I was not rushed driving to
airport. At one point I reminded myself not to feel nervous and did some
releasing on an old pattern I had of stressing out before travel.

I have seen a lot of changes in myself in last few weeks - I think with
the 3 eclipses this month (6/1, 6/15, 7/1) plus the solstice there is a
lot of energy for change in the air. I also experienced some back ache
which I have done lots of healing on. For me it was nt just an immediate
physical issue but an opportunity for me to learn better how to connect
to the Earth and strength my lower chakras. And to notice a lot of
tension that I had been holding in my legs and hips which were pulling
on my back muscles. Tension that I had had for years! Thank you spirit
for bringing me the back pain so I could work on these issues and
transform them :-)

Living life deeper 6/15/11 - Wed Gathering in Rockville

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we learn how to engage in deep, dogma-free spirituality with Dr. Anatole Ruslanov. Why do we crave DEPTH that seems inherently missing in modern culture? Join a much needed conversation where we shall touch upon the following questions:

  • What are the true goals of all spiritual practices?
  • What are your goals in life?
  • Who are you down deep the well of your soul?
  • Why would you be doing anything but jumping into this deep well now?
  • It is time to see what YOU can become!

Spirituality, or knowing the real you, is a birthright of all living beings -- because it is built in: we cannot be other than ourselves. Humanity, however, is incredibly good and efficient at being distracted away from happiness and satisfaction by culture, social mores, insecurity, etc. Thus, we humans need a way to our very own inner being, the source of all happiness and satisfaction.

You can find the way yourself. It is not that difficult in theory because it is not like you can run away from being you. In practice, following a system that is proven to work is a much better idea -- an efficient and effective way. It is similar to studying in college vs. by yourself -- you benefit by the system, by people more experienced than you, and your peers are there as well, to make the journey together a fun group affair. Doing it on your own is an admirable but more work in practice.

Dr. Anatole Ruslanov is the founder of Modern Seers, an international organization providing profound impetus towards culturally-neutral spiritual practices that are truly effective in culminating in an authentic, dogma-free spirituality. Dr. Anatole is currently a professor of computer science at SUNY Fredonia. He has recently returned from a 10-month tour of South Asia , including teaching a semester in Bhutan .

Dr. Anatole Ruslanov is a naturally gifted mystic and a life coach, mentor, healer, and teacher.

He was formally ordained in Varanasi, India as a tantric monastic after completing full monastic training. He is a Lineage Holder of Advaita Shaiva Tantra Yoga Tradition and an initiate of the ancient tantric Avadhuta Order. He has also had a substantial training in Zen and Vajrayana Buddhist traditions, Native American Toltec traditions, and Russian Orthodox Christian mystical spiritualities. Dr. Anatole has been practicing tantra yoga meditation for 36 years and teaching for 27 years.

Dr. Anatole founded Modern Seers Inc. (formerly Abhidhyan Yoga Institute) in 1991 and is the originator of Abhidhya'na Yoga (macromeditation), Abhidhya'na Insight Meditation, Abhidhya'na Yoga Philosophy, and Abhidhya'na Yoga Community.

Anatole has a baccalaureate degree in mathematics and a doctorate in computer science. He is currently employed as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at State University of New York at Fredonia.

Dr. Anatole is passionate about going deeper and taking you deeper!

Dr. Anatole’s involvements and personal interests include:

  •     A no-nonsense approach to spirituality that embraces our complete humanity;
  •     Life and transformation coaching;
  •     Spirituality divested of religious dogma;
  •     Vajra meditation teaching and teacher training;
  •     Natural, organic food and living foods;
  •     Energy-efficient, ecologically-sound community living;
  •     Non-dual spirituality and spiritual practices;
  •     Practice of science and rigorous inquiry as a spiritual path.

Polyamory As A Spiritual Path 4/6/11 - Wed Gathering in Rockville

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we join Cathy and Barry Smiler who will lead a discussion of Polyamory As A Spiritual Path. Our format will be more conversation than lecture as we explore this topic together.

Polyamory can be a powerful path of personal growth, a framework for
considering deep issues of self-empowerment, responsibility, community and what keeps us from real emotional intimacy and deep communication with ourselves and others. It's a truism that everybody does poly
differently, but what that really means is that if you want, every aspect of how we live and relate can be on the table for
consideration, not simply the elements around sexuality. When seen in this way, the poly vision of co-creating relationships offers a powerful opportunity to reconsider who we're close to, and why and why not. Taken the right way, this ongoing opportunity to re-evaluate all our boundaries to intimacy can be a powerful and growth-expansive spiritual practice.

C
athy and Barry have been leading poly discussion groups, workshops, and other events for years, initially in California and nowadays in the DC/MD/VA region, and especially in the Baltimore area where they
live. They can be reached at polyjunction (at) gmail (dot) com or through the BmorePoly Meetup at http://www.meetup.com/BmorePoly/

How to deal with hot button stuff

How to deal with hot button stuff - when I am centered (always good to ground and deep breath if triggered!) I read the email as the observer. It is like one of those martial arts where if someone punches at you you don't take it straight on - you side step at the last minute and use the opponent's energy to rush on by you. Do this mentally when attached and the punch doesn't land on you - it fly by you as you observe it going by.

Another method I just learned from Donna Eden book is called holding the "Oh My God" points. These are the bumps about an inch about each eyebrow. Hold them with your finger tips with thumbs on tempers for 30 seconds while you deep breath. These acupressure spots trigger more blood to flow to the forebrain (cerebellum) instead of the reptilian brain which is more reactive. This helps me see things from a higher perspective instead of reactivity and being stuck in old patterns.

And  I remind myself that my judgment is not me. And that usually it is something in me that is cause me to be triggered by someone else. How can I love that part of me that is like the triggering person in someway? Perhaps some Ho'oponopono - mediating on that disowned part of me with "I love you, thanks you, please forgive me, I am sorry" works for me.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from Laurie's Sex & Happiness: The Tantric Laws of Intimacy book:

  • “If I could distill all my advice about Tantra and sex into one sentence, that sentence would be, Make love in the unknown. In answer to all your fears and doubts about sex, I’d simply say to you, bring back your beginner’s mind. Come to the bedroom with no expectation. Come with openness in your heart for whatever happens.”
  •  “In Tantra you'll feel more peaceful, more tolerant, more aware of the world that has nothing to do with doing; everything to do with being.”
  • “Intimacy with another requires first and foremost coming to peace with your own emotional and physical needs.”
  • "Through Tantra, the power of sexual energy is able to render transformation."

Aura Bath

This is a great way to clear your aura of stagnent energy and relax.

  • One cup of salt (preferably natural salt without additives)
  • One cup baking soda
  • Optional A few drops of lavender essential oil for extra relaxation

Bless the water and salts and ask angels to help with clearing your aura and releasing any negativity into the water.

Soak in tub for an hour - longer than you might feel comfortable. Sometimes I let my head soak in the water and submerge for a while (will have to shampoo your hair afterwards if you do this as salt water like sea water will make it matt). Rinse off in the shower.

If you feel like it then take a nap afterwards or do a meditation and feel how relaxed and clear your energy feels now compared to before the aura bath.

Book: Excuses Begone - Dr. Wayne Dyer

I am fascinated by how we can change hard to shift habits such as income levels, weight, health, self-criticism. (I have been working on shifting my money habits for several years now!) I am also interested in memes and morphic fields - especially the large society wide morphic fields that can affect us without our realizing it - the assumptions that are never questioned and form part of our reality. For example gender roles, patriotism, the value of money and work.

I am also a fan of Wayne Dyer - I saw him live last time he was in DC - great speaker - and his movie The Shift is excellent. So I think this new book of his "Excuses Begone" will be good. And I have read "The Biology of Belief" - a great scientific look at how beliefs affect our cells and the biological/chemical mechanisms behind that.

Dr. Dyer Recommends
In his PBS special and the Excuses Begone! book, Dr. Dyer also discusses the research of two of his colleagues, Dr. Bruce Lipton and Richard Brodie, to help us challenge our excuses and embrace new beliefs.
The Biology of Belief
Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D.

This book is a groundbreaking work in the field of new biology, and it will forever change how you think about thinking. Through the research of Dr. Lipton and other leading-edge scientists, stunning new discoveries have been made about the interaction between your mind and body and the processes by which cells receive information. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology, that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our thoughts. Using simple language, illustrations, humor, and everyday examples, he demonstrates how the new science of Epigenetics is revolutionizing our understanding of the link between mind and matter and the profound effects it has on our personal lives and the collective life of our species.
"I encourage you to immerse yourself in The Biology of Belief. You’ll be inspired to reset your mind to the possibility that your beliefs carry far more weight than you realized in determining what you can do, what you’ll undertake, and how far you’re capable of going."
—Dr. Wayne Dyer

In addition to our genetic makeup, the other big excuse that most of us use to justify unhappiness, poor health, and lack of success is the family and cultural conditioning we’ve been programmed with. To that end, there’s a fascinating area of inquiry known as memetics, which deals with the mind and is analogous to the relationship of genetics to the body.
Virus of the Mind
Richard Brodie

Virus of the Mind is the first popular book devoted to the science of memetics, a controversial new field that transcends psychology, biology, anthropology, and cognitive science. Memetics is the science of memes, the invisible but very real DNA of human society. According to Brodie, it’s "a thought, belief, or attitude in your mind that can spread to and from other people’s minds." In Virus of the Mind, Richard Brodie carefully builds on the work of scientists Richard Dawkins, Douglas Hofstadter, Daniel Dennett, and others who have become fascinated with memes and their potential impact on our lives.
"Your beliefs have made these memes seem like second nature to you. While excuses are just thoughts or beliefs, you are the decider of what you ultimately store away as your guide to life."
—Dr. Wayne Dyer

Is your inner voice wrong?

Interesting article by healer Joan Newcomb about how to tell which is your true inner voice and which is just echos of other people or your ego. And I have to agree about meditation or walks in nature helping me get in touch with my true inner voice.

Your Inner Voice is WRONG!
©2011 Joan M. Newcomb

Sometimes your Inner Voice is wrong.  I'll give a couple of personal examples - when my son flew from Seattle to Mexico at New Years, we were told at the airport that, in San Francisco, one of his two checked bags would most likely be held back to a later flight.  Going to Mexico, that usually means you can kiss that luggage goodbye.

I spent the next 48 hours convinced that was what happened and being quite emotionally overwhelmed by the thought of what he'd lost.  When my son finally responded to my emails, Facebook messages and texts, all was well and he was enjoying the sunshine.

Last week I was given some misinformation about a family event by my 84 year old mother.  Her memory isn't good so she makes notes when she talks on the phone.  When I called her, she read something off her notes that sent me into a spiral for the entire week.  It turned out to be completely false.

What went wrong with my 'spidey senses'?  I'm a professional psychic, I should Know these things!

My first clue, with both of them, was overwhelming emotion.  One's true Inner Voice is softspoken and rational.  Listening to it is calming.  The information comes across and it's 'but of course' - you can feel the inner truth of it.

The second clue is the story.  If the voice you are listening to is telling you dramatic details, it's probably not true.  Your Inner Voice is not a soap opera screenwriter.  The world isn't coming to an end, there is no conspiracy theory, and other people really don't think of you that way (they're more concerned with how others think of *them*).

Your Inner Voice is your Inner Wisdom, not your inner gossip columnist.

The thing is, your Inner Voice and that other voice both sound like you.  It's just that one sounds like you when you're crazy.

Which one do you want to listen to?

One leads you in the direction of serenity, the other towards insanity.  It's really not that hard a decision.

However, you need discernment.  You need to start being more conscious of the narration inside your head.  You need to slow down and notice what you're listening to, which part is running your life.

Just because one is loud, doesn't mean it's more powerful.  It only gains energy if you listen to it.  It also gains energy if you argue with it.  Grab yourself by your ears and redirect your focus.

Notice what stimulates the loud voice and stop feeding it.  Perhaps you need to stop listening to the news.  Or start listening to the news on a foreign channel.  You may find the British and Asian news reports are far less agitating.  Perhaps you need to limit contact with certain friends or relatives, so you don't keep replaying conversations with them in your head.

Often the loud voice is most active in the wee hours of the night.  Take charge of that time and practice meditation, or affirmations, or decide what you'll do when you win the lottery.

Do things that stimulate your real Inner Voice.  Walks in nature, inspirational books, mellow music, whatever supports your soul.

The more you pay attention to your *real* Inner Voice, the stronger your connection with it becomes. Your life reflects your inner talk, and listening to your real Inner Voice brings you real inner peace. You may still be looking for work, or your soul mate, but you remain centered.

This week, notice which voice you're paying attention to inside your head.  If your life is hectic and your thoughts are running in circles, that's your fake voice.  Make choices to listen and respond to your *real* Inner Voice this week, and notice what happens!

The mind dramatically affects drug effectiveness

This study shows the mind and patient beliefs dramatically affect drug effects both able to increase the effect and descrease it - not just on a pain scale but in actual physically measurable functioning. Makes you wonder if everyday thoughts are just as important to control... :-)

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110226212356.htm

The Oxford University team, along with colleagues from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany, Cambridge University, and the Technische Universität München, set out to investigate these effects among 22 healthy adult volunteers by giving them an opioid drug and manipulating their expectations of the pain relief they might receive at different points.

The volunteers were placed in an MRI scanner and heat applied to the leg at a level where it begins to hurt -- set so that each individual rated the pain at 70 on a scale of 1 to 100. An intravenous line for administration of a potent opioid drug for pain relief was also introduced.

After an initial control run, unknown to the participants, the team started giving the drug to see what effects there would be in the absence of any knowledge or expectation of treatment. The average initial pain rating of 66 went down to 55.

The volunteers were then told that the drug would start being administered, although no change was actually made and they continued receiving the opioid at the same dose. The average pain ratings dropped further to 39.

Finally, the volunteers were led to believe the drug had been stopped and cautioned that there may be a possible increase in pain. Again, the drug was still being administered in the same way with no change. Their pain intensity increased to 64. That is, the pain was as great as in the absence of any pain relief at the beginning of the experiment.

The researchers used brain imaging to confirm the participants' reports of pain relief. MRI scans showed that the brain's pain networks responded to different extents according to the volunteers' expectations at each stage, and matching their reports of pain.

This showed the volunteers really did experience different levels of pain when their expectations were changed, although the administration of pain relief remained constant.

Professor Tracey notes that these results have been seen in a small, healthy group of volunteers, and that these are short-term, not sustained, manipulations of the participants' beliefs about the treatment.

But she says it's important not to underestimate the strength of the effect of such expectations on any treatment, and that clinicians need to know how to manage that.

Professor Tracey says there may also be lessons for the design of clinical trials. These are often carried out comparing a candidate drug against a dummy pill to see if there is any effect of a drug above and beyond that of the placebo.'We should control for the effect of people's expectations on the results of any clinical trial. At the very least we should make sure we minimize any negative expectations to make sure we're not masking true efficacy in a trial drug.'
