Abundant Michael: Health

My energy set point

I want to increase my energy set point so that I am comfortable having more energy. Any one got any thoughts on how to do that?

I think I have an energy set point. It is like a thermostat setting for how much energy I have. If I get too rested or energized then I find someway to stay up late or burn the candle at both ends to bring my energy level down. And if I am too tired I find a way to rest such as napping, watching TV, surfing the internet or if I am really not conscious getting sick.

This is a similar idea to our happiness set point that we looked at earlier this year at a Wednesday Gathering.

Is my health affected by immortality?

I was listening to a recent Immortality Expressions CD and Jim talked about how being
immortal has affected his health. How are you treating your health? Do you treat your
body with care so it can support your live on this planet for ever? Or do you treat it as
a disposable object that can be abused because you won't be needing it after a few
years?

Being immortal may seem like a choice that only affects us in the distant future, but
really it is something that affects my choices in the now.

  • What shall I eat?
  • What to drink?
  • Shall I take drugs (including alcohol and tobacco)?
  • When to go to bed?
  • When to workout?
  • How shall I drive?
  • Who and how shall I have sex with?
  • What thoughts shall I allow in my mind?

Let me know what your thoughts are on this topic and what works for you in staying healthy.

Wednesday Gathering in Rockville - Ayurveda Healing and Cooking 10/07/09

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we will learn about Ayurveda Healing and Cooking from Ayurvedic expert Francis Warner who worked for 10 years at the for Chopra Center Wellbeing in California. I have Vata main type and I have found that eating Vata spices and tea has helped me be more balanced and healthy over the last year. Here is what the Chopra Center says about Ayurveda:

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India and has been enjoying a major resurgence in recent years. Early Greek, Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine all have their roots in ayurveda. More than a mere system of treating illness, ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses, ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

Recognizing that human beings are part of nature, ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that govern our inner and outer environments: movement, transformation, and structure. Known in Sanskrit as Vata (Wind), Pitta (Fire), and Kapha (Earth), these primary forces are responsible for the characteristics of our mind and body. Each of us has a unique proportion of these three forces that shapes our nature. If Vata is dominant in our system, we tend to be thin, light, enthusiastic, energetic, and changeable. If Pitta predominates in our nature, we tend to be intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and we have a strong appetite for life. When Kapha prevails, we tend to be easy-going, methodical, and nurturing. Although each of us has all three forces, most people have one or two elements that predominate.

For each element, there is a balanced and imbalance expression. When Vata is balanced, a person is lively and creative, but when there is too much movement in the system, a person tends to experience anxiety, insomnia, dry skin, constipation, and difficulty focusing. When Pitta is functioning in a balanced manner, a person is warm, friendly, disciplined, a good leader, and a good speaker. When Pitta is out of balance, a person tends to be compulsive and irritable and may suffer from indigestion or an inflammatory condition. When Kapha is balanced, a person is sweet, supportive, and stable but when Kapha is out of balance, a person may experience sluggishness, weight gain, and sinus congestion.

An important goal of ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation to reestablish balance.

Francis will show us how to prepare an Ayurvedic meal : Channa Dhal: A soup made with high protein Chic-pea and Mung beans cooked with herbs and spices for maximum digestibility. Coconut Potato-Squash Curry: Butternut squash and Potatoes cooked in Coconut milk curry. During the meal preparation he will teach how to combine herbs, spices and vegetables to give dishes unique flavor and healing properties.

He will also show us how to prepare of Ayurvedic Churnnas (Mixture of spices for specific Mind/Body types). These Churnnas can be added to any dish as a condiment to maintain balance.

In discussion part of the evening he will give an introduction to Ayurveda and the three Mind/Body constitutional types (Doshas). We will also do a simple test to get a rough determination of individual constitutional type. Then we will discuss the Ayurvedic approach to Food, Cooking and Eating.

The workshop begins after dinner at 8pm.  I invite you to join us, though as always what ever choice you make you will be honored in.

PS I found an interesting article on using Ayurveda for weight loss here:
http://www.personalgrowthplanet.com/dieting/maharishiayurvedaapproachtoweightloss.htm

"Health is won or lost in how we live day-to-day life. I encourage everyone with weight management issues to take initiative and get on an upward spiral of healthy activity. Your quick reward will be greater freshness, happiness and a lighter, healthier body."

For those with sleep problems here are some tips on using Ayurveda to help:

(On Wednesday Francis will help you find your type: Vata, Pitta or Kapha)

And if you want more energy check this article out
http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Ayurveda/id/1172
"If you are feeling dull, sluggish, and drained of energy every day, it probably means that your diet contains too many energy-draining foods, which have clogged your micro channels with toxins. This mean that you need to overhaul your diet to include foods that create ojas and energy. The important thing is to eat food every day that boost your energy, rather then relying on a artificial boosters when you feel your energy sag, because there will always be a negative side-effect."

Wednesday Gathering in Rockville - Healing Circle 9/23/09

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we do a healing circle. I feel that this is a time of great shifts and transformations on the planet for many people and that healing will help us transform with love.

Some of you may have experienced healing circles at the Lord's Chapel and this one will be similar. You can put yourself in the circle or your family and friends or a situation you want to shift. We will raise energy and prayers and send light and love for for all those in the circle. When I have done this before it has been very powerful for all concerned.

I am planning on putting David and Gail in the circle. And Mother Earth. Of course with any healing the intended recipient is at choice whether to receive it or not or can pass it on to someone else in need.

The circle begins after dinner at 8pm.  I invite you to join us, though as always what ever choice you make you will be honored in.

Placebos Are Getting More Effective

Interesting article on how placebos are getting more effective over time. Also covers how pill color, theraputic rituals and even geography effect how well a drug or placebo works. Finally NIH and drug companies are studying placebos and how powerful the human mind-body can be.

TV fast

I am near the end of a 3 month TV and media fast that I started in June - no TV, no DVDs, no movies. I found it hard at first - I noticed that I was using TV as a way to zone out or avoid thinking about upsets. I did some EFT on my urges to watch TV and that helped. I have done more reading and spending time in my garden.

I have also noticed myself zoning out surfing the interest amlessly and did watch some YouTube videos until I realized that internet videos are not that different from TV! I have found that no TV does help me to feel more positive - no violence and negative images coming into my mind that way. I was Tivoing all my viewing before, so it is not like I was watching more than 10 hours a week to start with. And I have left the Tivo running during my fast to record a soap opera (EastEnders) that I have watched every episode of since it started in 1989. I will see how I feel about watching those episodes when the 3 months is up!

Wednesday Gathering in Bethesda - EFT for smoothness and mental flexibility 9/9/09

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering we learn EFT for smoothness and mental flexibility.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an emotional version of acupuncture wherein we stimulate certain meridian points by tapping on them with our fingertips. This addresses a new cause for emotional issues (unbalanced energy meridians). Properly done, this frequently reduces the therapeutic process from months or years down to hours or minutes. And, since emotional stress can contribute to pain, disease and physical ailments, we often find that EFT provides astonishing physical relief. (More at http://www.emofree.com/Newcomer.htm)

Theme:   1st hour :  presentation about Emotional Freedom Technique ~ a simple way to tap body parts to release emotional blocks to enjoy greater "smoothness and mental flexibility".
Presenter: Joel Hamaker, PhD
2nd hour:  unstructured socializing fun .... and maybe some improv movement/dancing by Michelle Ava.

Costs:  $20 for singles;  $30 for couples

Location:  at Joel Hamaker's house   6504 Kenhowe Dr. Bethesda, MD 20817 [up the hill from the town of Glen Echo]  [east of Wilson La; west of Goldsboro Rd]  301-229-9470 Email: joelspeaks2u (at) gmail (dot) com

Chef:  David Alde

The tapping begins after dinner at 8pm.  I invite you to join us, though as always what ever choice you make you will be honored in.

How I began eating vegan food

I started eating only vegan food last summer - I was doing some detoxing and was on a raw food diet which is vegan. Then I went to Rainbow Gathering in Wyoming and read some pamphlets on how farms treat the animals cruelly. Even the organic and free range chickens may not be so free on a large farm. When we were driving out of the Rocky mountains on the way home, we stopped at an all night dinner and I ordered steak and eggs. The food was good quality but my stomach hurt as I ate it and I didn't sleep well all night long. I think it was a message from my body to not eat this kind of food. So I chose to become vegan that morning. It was both a health issue, a spiritual issue and a green issue for me. (Green because to produce the same amount of nutrition from meat takes 2-10 times as much resources as from plant food).

Since then I have either eaten vegan or raw food. I did slip once last year when I had a craving for chicken but adding more protein (nuts, hemp milk, beans) to my diet solved that problem. I feel healthy and I have lost about 10 lbs too.

Here is a link to the cover article in Time Magazine that makes a strong arguement for re-evaluating our food choices (and it's packaging)

Wednesday Gathering in Rockville - The Mood Cure 3/4/09

This Wednesday Sandbox gathering  we look at how diet and amino acids can dramatically improve your mood. Do you want to lift the dark cloud of depression? or are you drowning in apathy but don't have to energy to take any action? Or are you feeling anxious and stressed all the time? Or do your overreact to others innocent remarks? Or do you want to let go of emotional eating, recover from addictions or find a reliable alternatives to anti-depressants?

Many people are in a bad mood. Depression and anxiety have tripled in the last ten years. The book "The Mood Cure" by Julia Ross explains why and provides the good news that we can feel better emotionally, without the use of caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, or anti-depressants-and the even better news that we can begin to see the results in just one day with brain-fueling amino acids combined with a high-protein, healthy-fat, veggie-rich diet and other nutritional strategies.

I will have some samples of the amino acids to try on hand (available from health food store MOM or any other other vitamin shop). For me I felt results within 15 minutes of taking the supplement for my mood type (the Blahs).

Take the questionnaire to see what mood type(s) you have

Are You Suffering from the Blahs?

3) Do you often feel depressed - the flat, bored, apathetic kind?

2) Are you low on physical or mental energy? Do you feel tired a lot, have to push yourself to exercise?

3) Are you easily chilled? Do you have cold hands or feet?

3) Do you feel the need to get more alert and motivated by consuming a lot of coffee or other "uppers" like sugar, diet soda, ephedra, or cocaine?

Rest of Questions at http://www.moodcure.com/Questionnaire.html

Please read warnings at http://www.moodcure.com/aminoacidprecautions.html before taking any of these supplements.

The cure begins after dinner at 8pm.  I invite you to join us, though as always what ever choice you make you will be honored in.
